It seems that designers were competing very fiercely in order to entertain their viewers, highlighting the show itself instead of the value of the clothes. Is fashion really about taste?

When it comes to the fashion industry, it’s clear that nothing is as it used to be back in the time of Coco Chanel. Everything has radically changed – from shapes to fabrics and patterns. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean something bad – innovations and positive changes are always welcome. However, have we gone too far with our fashion experiments? Is fashion still about taste? Well, we guess that the answer depends on each individual’s personal perspective – if one woman finds something attractive, another one may see it as too revealing, and vice versa. Having that in mind, a new, groundbreaking exhibition opened last month at the Barbican Centre in London. Its name is “The Vulgar: Fashion Redefined”, and it deals with the idea of taste as a “mobile concept”.

What is actually vulgar?

The show organizers claim that vulgarity should not be linked to the object itself – but to the eye of the beholder. As already stated, everything is about perspective – the way you perceive glamour may be significantly different from the way someone else does. The aforementioned exhibition is authentic just because it doesn’t tell you what’s vulgar and what’s not – it lets you do that for yourself. Let’s take those infamous Juicy Couture velvet sweats for an example. For some people, these are absolute must-haves that depict their impeccable personal style. For others, these are just questionable-quality sweats, with the word “juicy” written all over the bum. Which group of people do you belong to?

Expensive doesn’t always mean style

It seems that fashion designers these days simply can’t stick to what’s ordinary. They crave fashionistas’ attention, hoping that their talent and creativity will be recognized, and what’s more – sold for good money. However, all that glitters is not gold, right? Designers and fashion houses such as Karl Lagerfeld, Moschino, Marc Jacobs, and Prada are constantly pushing the fashion game to a whole new level, coming up with risky, mind-blowing runway shows meant to entertain the viewers. The truth is that not even a bad review will stop them from selling their items to their fierce customers – there’s no such a thing as bad publicity. Apart from those fashion magnates who are trying hard to pull off those trends, there are celebrities who support this vulgar and expensive fashion game. Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, and Gigi Hadid are just some of the well-known names who are not afraid to experiment – which often results in very questionable outfits no one else would probably wear. But that’s fashion, too!

What about today’s menswear?

When it comes to today’s menswear, it’s obvious that vulgarity can be found in collections of particular designers. However, it seems that things are getting much better. Timeless classics have always been the most important parts of every fashionista’s wardrobe, no matter what.
